‘We will get it. One way or another, we're going to get it.’ - With this statement in Congress, US President Donald Trump was referring to Greenland. As in the case of Ukraine, he is primarily interested in valuable natural resources there.
Trump and his ‘first buddy’ Elon Musk want access to strategic raw materials such as copper, nickel, titanium, uranium and rare earths. These are important for the realisation of future projects in areas such as electromobility and space travel, but also for artificial intelligence and modern weapons systems.
Greenland and Ukraine offer the USA possible ways out of its dependence on raw materials from its superpower rival China, which dominates the global market, especially for rare earths. Trump is also blatantly targeting this point with his latest ‘raw materials deal’ with Ukraine, where the actual deposits could be smaller than expected.
The FERI Cognitive Finance Institute predicted this intense battle for strategic raw materials at an early stage - most recently in the German analysis „Hightech-Metalle und Seltene Erden – Akute Rohstoff-Risiken für Europas Zukunft“ (available in the download area on this page).
