With the AI boom, the power requirements of tech giants such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft are increasing rapidly, as their data centers and AI labs need more and more electricity! Training increasingly powerful AI models in particular absorbs enormous amounts of energy.
Demand for energy in the digital economy in the USA is expected to more than triple by 2030! As a result, the digital economy's share of total energy demand will also increase massively - from around 4% today to almost 12% in 2030. However, an increase of up to 20% is even conceivable. As a result, large AI training clusters could soon consume as much electricity as medium-sized US states.
This increases the pressure to supply data centers with sustainable energy. Companies are increasingly building their own wind farms and solar fields - or securing access to nuclear power plants. But new technologies such as geothermal and fusion energy are also being brought into play. Access to energy is thus becoming a key resource in the digital age.
The FERI Cognitive Finance Institute recognized very early on (2020!) that increasing digitalization leaves a massive ecological footprint - and discussed it critically. The corresponding analysis is available in German in the download area on this page.
