The current EU push for import tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles shows that the global automotive sector is experiencing a profound disruption. For the first time, China has taken over the global market leadership in 2023 with almost 5 million exported vehicles. Previous export giants such as Germany (around 3 million) and Japan (4.4 million) have now been significantly surpassed.
Particularly impressive: the dynamic with which China is rolling up the market. With a five-fold increase in export figures in just four years, China is underlining its ambition to become a global leader in important industries of the future.
China's lead in the field of electromobility is helping: in 2023, around a quarter of the vehicles exported by China had an electric drive. (An interesting side note: the largest sales market for Chinese vehicles is now Russia!)
China's ambitious goals in key future industries - known as the "Made in China 2025" program - have already been the subject of several detailed analyses. Under the question "Will China become a high-tech superpower?", we - in a study with the China experts from Sinolytics - clearly predicted the current scenario at an early stage.
The study can be downloaded in German from the download area on this page.
