The prospects are promising. The global market for quantum computing is expected to grow strongly by 2035: according to conservative forecasts, to at least 28 billion US dollars, but possibly far beyond that (over 70 billion US dollars). Scalable quantum computers and even a quantum internet could become a reality in this time.
A lot has happened since our first analysis of quantum technology was published in 2019: the experimental phase is over and quantum computers are on the verge of a commercial breakthrough. The race for technological leadership is also already in full swing. The main players are (as is so often the case) the superpower rivals USA and China, followed by Europe.
It is already clear that quantum technology (after AI) is the next “game changer” in digitalization and will massively transform many areas of the financial system and the real economy. Mastering powerful quantum systems will therefore be a decisive factor for the future - economically, but also for defense and national security. In addition to enormous growth opportunities, there are also new types of risks: quantum computers can even overcome complex encryption processes - even in strategically relevant areas such as politics, the military and global data communication.
Our analysis “Quantum age: quantum computing as a game changer for the financial and real economy” provides in-depth insights into the next “disruptor” of digitalization. Like the aforementioned publication from 2019, it is available in German for download on this page.
