The rapid development of mRNA vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic has impressively demonstrated the key role that biotechnological innovations can play. Since then, the share of biotechnologically produced preparations in global pharmaceutical sales has increased significantly.
The systematic use of artificial intelligence will be an important driver of innovation in the future, enabling the development of completely new drugs and therapeutic approaches. The biotech share of pharmaceutical sales is therefore likely to increase significantly by 2028 - to around 44%.
Biotechnology not only offers solutions to numerous complex social challenges (climate change, nutrition, ageing, lack of resources, etc.), but also promises to increase efficiency in industry, agriculture and environmental protection, according to our study “The BioTech Revolution - New Dynamics through Innovative Technologies”.
The study, which was compiled in cooperation with experts from the Bavarian Biotechnology Cluster BioM, is available in German as a short version in the download area.
