A “global recession of freedom” is pushing back fundamental liberal values and jeopardizing democratic structures. From the USA to Europe, the symptoms are clear: social division, dysfunctional political processes and growing disenchantment with democracy.
The rise of an “autocratic axis” around Russia and China, which reject liberal ideas and act as a global “front against freedom”, is exacerbating the situation.
