The study on the so-called "Blue Economy", presented at the UN Ocean Conference 2022 in Lisbon, analyzes the enormous economic potential of the marine ecosystem and develops innovative solutions to protect marine resources. The Blue Economy stands for general economic activity in the context of the oceans and coasts. After all, oceans are not only important for the climate: the function of the oceans is diverse and our dependence on them is extremely extensive.
This study, which was produced in collaboration with Fraunhofer IGD and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center (presented for the first time in a preliminary version at the 2022 UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon), sheds light on the importance of the oceans for the global ecosystem. It analyzes the interactions between ecological, economic, political and social factors as well as the potential of a sustainable "blue" economy as a response to pressing challenges.
